More garage-band biotech

Biotech hobbyists are increasingly growing in numbers, joining the ranks of computer scientists and web developers who spun successful startups out of basement ventures, according to the Aug. 31 issue of The Economist. As I posted before, basement biotech is just another sign of the increasing commoditization of science. Of course $500k in government grants never hurts, but a smart college grad can do a lot of interesting stuff with websites like DNA Hack.

DOE funds microbial-energy sequencing project

The Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced a $1.6 Million program to sequence the genomes of six energy-producing cyanobacteria. The program, involving researchers at Wash U, is aimed at discovering new genes for electricity production and ethanol conversion.

Wash U's contributions are being handled by the newly-created U.S. Department of Energy Bioenergy Competition Committee.
