What can St. Louis become?
40 years ago, the biotech-hub that is San Diego was known for two things: naval contracting and tuna fishing. UCSD, now a major research university, had only recently been founded, and the idea that the sleepy port town would become a high-tech hotbed was pretty far from anyone's mind. In the next 4 decades innovative science and gutsy financing would transform the region, along with sectors in Raleigh, Boston, San Francisco, and elsewhere. Often overlooked, though, was the effect of a much simpler process: creative people talking to each other.
St. Louis is one of dozens of biotech hopefuls armed with major academic centers and access to funds, but equally important is our community dialogue. How should we develop the region's technology centers? What is the best way to translate science into helpful products? How can our science benefit our community?
The goal of this site is to provide a forum for people to learn the status of our community and discuss their visions for the future. Who is it written for? Undergraduates, grad students, PhD's, scientists, engineers, MD's, financiers, managers, and anyone else interested in the status of the St. Louis biotech sector.
